Regional Mark Processing Center (RMPC)

The Regional Mark Processing Center (RMPC) has been in operation since 1977 when it was decided that a centrally managed regional database was needed to share coded wire tag (CWT) data among the various fisheries agencies on the West Coast of the U.S. The RMPC undertakes the design, development, implementation, and on-going evaluation of the central database for the storage and retrieval of Pacific Coast wide CWTs and related fisheries information.

The RMPC validates multi-agency submissions of CWT release, monitoring and evaluation, recovery and related data used for Pacific salmon and steelhead research studies and harvest management. This includes managing the data exchange specification, validating data submissions, generating reports, and distributing documentation. Data users access the regional CWT database and related fisheries information through the Regional Mark Information System (RMIS). The data center is managed using modern, up-to-date relational-database management software on RMPC server computers.

The 1985 Pacific Salmon Treaty designated the RMPC as the single site to exchange all United States CWT information with Canada in the Pacific Salmon Commission's (PSC) format. Canada likewise forwards all of its CWT data to the RMPC where it is validated and then merged into RMIS, the regional database.

Data & Tools

The Regional Mark Processing Center managed projects include:

Coded Wire Tag (CWT) Database - The central United States repository for all coded-wire tagged and otherwise associated    release, catch, sample, and recovery data regarding anadromous salmonids in the greater Pacific Coast Region of North    America.

RMIS Standard Report System - Query the CWT database and run reports of Releases, Recoveries, Catch/Sample, or Location    Codes.

RMIS Analysis Report System - Query the CWT database and run Recovery reports based on Tag Code and/or Management    Fishery.

Catch & Effort (C&E) Report System - Query the Catch & Effort database and run reports of C&E (raw datasets) or Location    Codes.

Partners & Funding

Primary project partners who provide and use CWT data are the California Department of Fish and Game (CDFG), Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW), Idaho Department of Fish and Game (IDFG), Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW), Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADFG), Northwest Indian Fisheries Commission (NWIFC), Columbia Inter-tribal Fish Commission (CRITFC) and their member tribes, National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), and the Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO).

Funding is provided by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and by the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) through its fish and wildlife program.
