Education

Education is a key element in promoting the better utilization of our fisheries. The Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission hosts a number of programs that focus on education efforts. The following are a few examples of those efforts.

The Aquatic Invasive Species Program invests significant efforts to educate the public as well as fisheries organizations on the impacts of Aquatic Invasive Species as well as preventative measures for recreational and commercial fisheries.  A collection of educational materials are available on the Aquatic Invasive Species Program website.

Education is also an integral aspect of the Habitat Program. In addition to the programs numerous activities, the Habitat Program focuses on watershed education for decision makers and committees that advise policy makers on habitat conservation.

The Columbia Basin Fish & Wildlife Library is an excellent resource, and is one of the largest libraries of fish and wildlife material related to the Columbia Basin and the greater Pacific Northwest.  The library serves local, state, and federal managers and researchers, and is also open to the public.

A unique look at the life journey of salmon and steelhead is available via the Interpretive Center of the PIT Tag Information System (PTAGIS) website.  You’ll see how PTAGIS tracks fish marked with a Passive Integrated Transponder (PIT) tags, and makes valuable data accessible to researchers seeking information about fish movement and behavior.
