Welcome to the third issue of Kelp Forest! Kelp Forest is the newsletter of the California Department of Fish and Game's Northern California Sport Fish Project, which is responsible for research and management of marine sport fisheries (except salmon and invertebrates) along the northern California coast, and the Northern California Nearshore Shellfish Assessment Project, which is responsible for research and management of the northern California abalone sport fishery.

Contributors to this issue are marine biologists Kon Karpov and Doug Albin, and fisheries data technician Wade Van Buskirk. Sadly, this is the last issue to which Wade will contribute, at least for a while. Wade has accepted a job assignment with the National Marine Fisheries Service in Washington DC. beginning in January 1995. Wade's talents as a computer software programmer have greatly benefitted the Northern California Sport Fish Project, and his artistic sense is evident in the cover art of this issue of Kelp Forest, as well as in the layout of this and past issues. Good luck Wade, you will be missed!

We also extend special thanks to Mary Patyten, College of the Redwoods student volunteer intern, for editing this issue.

The purpose of Kelp Forest is to provide public information on northern California marine sport fishery resources and issues. If you would like to be placed on our mailing list, or have any questions you would like answered in Kelp Forest, write to us at the above address. When our schedules permit, we are also available to provide talks to groups interested in marine sport fishery resources and issues.
