RECFIN PROJECT IN DIRE STRAITS

The Recreational Fishery Information Network (RecFIN) for Pacific coast states is a project to centralize data on recreational ocean fishing from California, Oregon, and Washington. The project would allow for improved management of our fisheries by improving access to this data by standardization and automation. The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) has agreed to provide assistance to the Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission (PSMFC) in program development. PSMFC has requested program funding from NMFS on behalf of the participants. The program includes the Marine Recreational Statistical Survey (MRFSS) for participants in 1993. The program will reduce duplication of effort between the participants' surveys and the MRFSS. It is unknown if funding for this worthy program will continue in 1994 with the budget restructuring brewing in the nation's capitol.
