Gone Fishing - The Decline of Fishing as a Pastime

The decline in numbers of Americans going fishing is due, in part, to the increase in urban populations. A survey by the Sport Fishing Promotion Council identified lack of time as the major reason (80%) for quitting sportfishing. New fishers are usually (90%) introduced to fishing at a young age (under 20), with half beginning by age 10. The attractiveness of sportfishing has declined because of competition with other forms of entertainment and changes in family structure. Although traditional father-son fishing trips are becoming rarer, sportfishing is still a quality activity that provides opportunities for companionship and the reward of a healthy outdoor experience and fresh fish. Don't let sportfishing become a forgotten art, introduce our children to the pleasure of fishing. Licenses are not required for children up to age 16, and adults can buy sportfishing licenses with credit cards by calling (916) 227-2246. Licenses are not required on public piers. Good fishing! -WV
