Welcome to the sixth issue of Kelp Forest,
newsletter of the California Department of Fish and Game’s
Northern California Sport Finfish and Abalone Project (NRSFA). As with
previous issues, our goal is to communicate to the public what we
have learned about northern California’s marine sportfishery resource.
Our hope is that an informed public will lead to effective resource stewardship.
This issue covers a variety of projects that are closely
tied to the focus of the NRSFA, such as our Nearshore
Reef Fish Tagging Study (see NRFTS Update
and Tag Retention Study at Steinhart
Ends) and our Lingcod Hooking Mortality Study
(see Lingcod Declines). In addition to
what we have learned over the last |
two years, we describe changes in abalone regulations
(Sen. Thompson’s Bill Closes Abalone Fishery
to the South), good news about north coast abalone
stocks (see Depth Refuge : Management
that Works), and a distressing description of a species on the
edge of extinction (see White Abalone- An Extinct
Possibility?). We’ve felt priveleged this year to work with an
ever-increasing number of valuable partners to improve resource stewardship
.
As our schedules permit, we also provide talks to groups
interested in marine sportfishery issues. If you wish to be placed on our
mailing list, please write to us at the above address.
