Preflight briefing: flight path and how to navigate the watershed tour

Welcome to the virtual watershed tour of the Green River. The Green River originates in the Cascade Range south of Stampede Pass at an elevation of about 4,500 feet and flows northwest 90.5 miles to Elliot Bay.

The Green River flows through a watershed that is home to nearly 10% of state residents, making it the second-most populated watershed in the state! It provides local drinking water, food, forest products flood, protection, recreation, and a beautiful environment in which to live and work. It also supports a diversity of salmon, including chinook, coho, chum, and steelhead.

The 15 local governments that share the Green/Duwamish and Central Puget Sound Watershed in southern King County are working together to protect and restore salmon habitat. The listing of chinook salmon and bull trout under the Endangered Species Act has spurred these jurisdictions to work together. Protecting salmon and water quality also protects human health and quality of life, for us and for future generations.

Take a look at the challenge, the potential, and the beauty as we fly over the watershed.

To enter the tour you may simply click on “Enter Tour”. You will be provided with an eagle eye view of the entire watershed as you “fly” along the river through each subwatershed section as it flows from high Cascade Mountains toward Puget Sound or reverse the flight direction and follow the path of a returning salmon from the mouth to mountains.

Each subwatershed section will offer a localized map with accompanying images, information, and resource links. At the end of the tour you can find more information, resources, and details regarding setting up your on actual or the virtual watershed tour.
