Pacific Marine Estuarine Fish Habitat Partnership (PMEP)
Meeting Agenda, Links to Presentations, Notes and Updated Documents (May 25-26, 2010)
Background:
By request of the Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission representing several key stakeholders and entities, the Pacific Marine Estuarine Fish Habitat Partnership (PMEP) was granted candidate partnership status in 2009 under the National Fish Habitat Action Plan (NFHAP) - see http://www.fishhabitat.org/ for more details. The purpose of the PMEP is to conserve and restore marine and estuarine habitats along the Pacific coast through a coordinated multi-state effort.
Meeting:
The first meeting of the group was held on May 25th and 26th, 2010 in Portland, Oregon, at the McMenamin's Kennedy School.
Meeting Goals:
1. Further develop and refine the partnership - clearly establish its relevance and purpose.
2. Determine the partnership's niche - answer: "How can this new partnership aid other ongoing partnership efforts?" "What can it accomplish that others cannot?"
3. Develop a mission statement with goals and objectives that articulate the breadth and scope of the partnership.
4. Review completed broad-scale scientific assessments that will likely contribute towards identifying critical marine and estuarine areasto focus conservation and restoration efforts.
5. Define the geographic scope for the fish habitat partnerships.
6. Define the priority needs for initial work.
7. Establish organizational and governance structure for the partnership.
Outcomes:
At the end of the meeting, an interim steering committee was established to organize subsequent meetings to further the development of a strategic plan. The Interim Steering Committee will take deliberate heed of the direction and ideas established by participants in this first meeting in regards to goals and priorities, geographic scope and phasing, and the vision and mission and bylaw documents. However, it was noted that the State of California and other key players were missing from the meeting for an eventual scope of the partnership extending from SE Alaska and British Columbiaon down the coast to northern Baja, California.
