About RMPC:

The Regional Mark Processing Center (RMPC) has been in operation since 1977. It provides essential services to international, state, federal, and tribal fisheries organizations involved in marking anadromous salmonids throughout the Pacific region. These services include regional coordination of salmon tagging and fin marking programs, and maintenance of coastwide databases for coded wire tag (CWT) releases, recoveries, and associated catch/sample information.

The RMPC designs, develops, implements, and evaluates the central database for the storage and retrieval of coastwide CWT and related fisheries information. The RMPC validates multi-agency submissions of CWT release, recovery, and related data for Pacific salmon and steelhead research studies and harvest management.  The data center is managed using Oracle and Linux based applications on its server at the Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission.

Data users access the regional CWT database and related fisheries information through the RMPC's Regional Mark Information System (RMIS). The RMIS data sets consist principally of the:

  • Coded-Wire Tag (CWT) database;
  • Catch & Effort (C&E) database.

RMIS allows data users to build a query, preview the result set row by row, then run formatted reports of their choice using the result set. The reports may then be returned to the browser, or sent to a user-entered email address.

The 1985 Pacific Salmon Treaty designated the RMPC as the single site to exchange all United States CWT information with Canada in the Pacific Salmon Commission's (PSC) format. Canada likewise forwards all of its CWT data to the Mark Center where it is validated and then merged into the regional database.

The Regional Mark Processing Center also assists the Pacific Salmon Commission's Working Group on Data Standards in developing and updating CWT data exchange formats. In addition, it provides the coast-wide user community with current and updated CWT data format specifications following any revisions made by the PSC Working Group. The RMPC also provides technical support for the Regional Committee on Anadromous Marking and Tagging (Mark Committee) by annually reporting to this committee on the status of CWT datasets and data center operations, and by providing incidental technical support as requested by members of the Mark Committee.
